Santo is a mountainous region and is home to Vanuatu’s highest peak Mount Tabwemasana.
It has a humid, tropical climate, with a temperature ranging between 16°C and 33°C, and variable rainfall. Occasionally, it receives ashfall from the Ambrym volcano located to its southeast.
The flora here is varied and can be divided into five types rainforest, moss forest, high grasslands, low grasslands, and shore plants.
Santo has an indigenous, chiefly Melanesian, population that is engaged in tourism, cash crop farming (coffee, cocoa, peanuts, etc.), and fishing. A majority of the population is Christian. The people accord great importance to customs and traditions.
