One of Côte d'Ivoire’s most famous festivals is the Fêtes des Masques (Festival of Masks), held in November, where the villagers pay homage to the forested spirits embodied in the masks. The Fête du Dipri held in Gomon is an eccentric event to exorcise the village of evil spells. The event, which starts at midnight, continues until late afternoon the next day. Another important event is the week long carnival in Bouaké held in March.

The major Muslim holiday is Ramadan, when everyone fasts between sunrise and sunset. Ramadan ends with a huge feast, Eid al-Fitr. Tabaski is the Feast of the Sacrifice where every family is expected to sacrifice a ram. These festivals are held according to the Islamic calendar which is based on the lunar cycle.

Independence Day, celebrated on 7 August, commemorates its liberation from the French.
