Morocco celebrates Independence Day on 18 November and Throne Day on 3 March. All Islamic festivals are held according to the phases of the moon. During Ramadan, which extends for around one month and culminates with the festival of Eid al-Fitr, a majority of shops, restaurants and business remain open; however, in certain orthodox areas, life may come to a standstill.

Morocco has a busy cultural scene with festivals and events through out the year. The most high profile festival is the annual Marrakech’s International Film Festival, which takes place between November and December. June sees the annual Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival, a celebration of the mysterious Gnaouas music; this also the time for the annual Fez Sacred Music Festival. In July, Goulimine hosts a Camel Festival and a weekly Camel Fair.
