The Petrified Forests in this region are considered to be the best examples of petrified wood in the world. Spread over hundreds of acres, these are made of fossil remains of 650,000,000-year-old coniferous trees. Another interesting site is the ancient caves with walls and roofs covered with 10,000-year-old aboriginal art.

Housed within the old station building, the Desiderio Torres Regional Museum contains exhibits spread across the gamut of time. Ribs and bones of dinosaurs to tools and arms used by extinct tribes to objects from the colonial times are all displayed here. The two lakes—Lake Patagonia and Lake Colhue Huapi—provide ample opportunity for water sports.

The Sarasola Caves are located just outside Sarmiento. The route to the caves climbs through hills and valleys and then a walk down a 400-metre-long tunnel leads to the caves inside the earth.
