Antofagasta de la Sierra is located in the northern part of Argentina. It is primarily a rural community with agriculture and sheep rearing being the primary occupations.
The region experiences an extremely arid climate. During summer, the average temperature in the daytime rises as high as 33°C. During winter, the days are mostly pleasant but at times the temperature may drop to as low as 1°C.
This region with a population of approximately 1,300 inhabitants is nestled within the Puna region—a high plateau that is spread across Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, besides Argentina.
Antofagasta de la Sierra is a volcanic field surrounded by volcanic mountains which were active until a few thousand years ago. While the entire Puna plateau is covered with these volcanic fields, this one is the youngest of all.
