The main attraction of Antofagasta de la Sierra is its astounding and varied natural beauty. It is surrounded by volcanoes, deserts and even marshlands. Some of the interesting places to visit in the region are the Torreon Hill, the White Lagoon National Reservation Centre which has a variety of plant species, and the Dead Man Salt Mine.
Of the volcanoes, the Galan Volcanoes, amongst the tallest in the world, are one of the most impressive. Offering facilities for excursions, Antofagasta is the ideal base to explore the Catamarca province. Other activities here include visiting the archaeological sites, trekking and hiking up the high mountains, or merely mingling with the local weaver craftswomen.
