Cafayate is an ideal base to explore the Cachaqui Valley, known for its unique topography ranging from a rocky desert to a dense forest. La Rosa Wine Cellar is a must-visit for all. The experience includes visiting the wine cellar, taking a guided tour of the factory to see how the wine is processed, and a tasting session.
In the outskirts, is San Isidro, a ranch. It is surrounded by caves known for the paintings and etchings on the walls; a famous one is the piedra grabada de los numeros, literally translated, the stone engraved with numbers. Another site a little further away is the city of Tolombon which houses a fortress from the pre-Hispanic times.
The Fiesta de la Serenata is held annually either in late January or early February. It attracts visitors from all over the province who flock to see the folk music and dance performances. During this time, many people dress up in their traditional costumes.
