y that time, Córdoba had become the cradle of knowledge and political
progress. By the beginning of the 19th century, the dawn of independence started
to beat and the province turned to be a fertile ground for the efforts which
came to be worth in the Revolución de Mayo of 1810 (a Revolution which
took place on May 1810). It was also of preponderance the participation of Córdoba
in the effort to make every province independent from the federal system.
The huge growth which was transforming Córdoba into one of the most important
cities of the nation was interrupted by the Independent war and the subsequent
civil struggles. Once these harsh times to organize the country halted, the
process of growth continued. By the mid 19th century, the arrival of immigrants
produced a demographic growth which allowed the railway laying, essential characteristic
for the economical development during those times.
Amid this progress, on August 16th 1855, the Constitution of the province of
Córdoba was issued; until that time Córdoba had been ruled by
"Provisional Regulations". Córdoba was in fact the protagonist
of the facts and more significant changes in the national history. It was the
student uprising, looking for updating the university system, during the 20th
century which brought into life the "1918 Reform" soon passed on to
the rest of the national cities, and later, to the big capital cities of Latin
America. The political activity, characteristic of Córdoba, was also
reflected during the popular uprising of 1969, known as "Cordobazo",
during which the students and workers, which took place in the streets of Córdoba,
put an end to the dictatorial government.
The industrial phase starts in Córdoba when the Aircraft Military Factory
is founded in 1927. The arrival of big car factories and other industries turned
Córdoba into a very productive province, which directly influenced on
its cultural life. Magazines as Hortensia, which showed the particular humour
of Córdoba, were the cradle of the most renowned comedians of the country.
Little by little Córdoba was developing, little by little Córdoba
culture and history was spinning. Based on aboriginal traces and industrial
development, this city vibrates to the rhythm of its inhabitants and progress.
With a historical centre, the colonial roots of Córdoba spread around
its ancient neighborhoods and myths. The legends about the cobbled pavings and
the Calicanto de la Cañada (a stone reservoir construction in the city
centre holding the waters of Suquía River), the stories of hidden tunnels
under the pedestrian passages and the majestic churches' altars all combined
with a fascinating mysticism turn Córdoba into an ideal place to enjoy
history and culture.
If tourists know how to listen the sounds of Córdoba streets, there will
come out legends told by its settlers, its ghosts and memories; these will then
mix with the beliefs and mysteries of the voices of the city. The lights and
shadows of a history which takes back to other myths; myths told by the aboriginal
chiefs and by the first settlers of this province under the lights and shadows
of a thousand-year-old bonfire.
