El Calafate: Attractions and more...
The prime purpose for any visitor travelling to El Calafate is to see the Perito Moreno Glacier. Of the 48 glaciers in the area, this 250 sq km mass of snow and ice is the most popular among tourists. The Glaciers National Park flanked by Lake Argentino and Lake Viedma, in the vicinity, is another prime attraction. The national park is made up of lakes, glaciers and mountains and is favoured by visitors for hiking, trekking, rock climbing and even boating excursions to the glaciers.
The El Calafate Regional Museum which displays the life of the first settlers in the region and the Historical Interpretation Centre which takes one through 14,000 years of the region’s history are worth a visit.
Of late, the option of staying on a typical South American ranch, known as an estancia, has caught the fancy of many visitors. These give the visitors an opportunity to enjoy the rural life supplemented by tours and other activities.
