Gran Chaco: Attractions and more...
This region is most known for its natural attractions. The Chaco National Park is a large expanse of swamps, grasslands and palm savannahs. The Nature Reserve of Estricta Colonia Benitez, ideal for eco-tourists, is home to rich flora and fauna. Campo del Cielo is an area famous for meteorite fragments from over 6,000 years ago. Laguna Blanca is popular amongst tourists for bird-watching and aquatic sports. Make sure to visit the thermal springs of Río Hondo and Las Aguas del Sol.
The Cathedral of Santiago del Estero, the Church of Santo Domingo and the Cathedral in Formosa City are important ecclesiastical buildings. Casa de Gobierno, a national monument in Formosa, must be visited. The Provincial Archaeology Museum provides valuable historical information on this region. Juan Pablo Duffard Regional Historical Museum houses artefacts from the colonial era.
The city of Resistencia (also called ‘City of Sculptures’) in Chaco must be visited to admire the 300 sculptures that dot this city. A wood-carving festival is held annually in Resistencia. Fiesta de la Virgen de la Catedral is a religious festival celebrated in Formosa City. Several excursions into Gran Chaco are organised from all the three provinces.
