The main square of the city is the Moreno Square flanked by the Town Hall on one side and the La Plata Cathedral—the most magnificent structure in the city—on the other. An elevator ride to the top of one of the cathedral towers gives a great view of the entire city. The Contemporary Art Museum has on display permanent exhibits as well as shows which are changed on a regular basis.
La Plata is known as the green city because of the several green spots incorporated in the planning. The largest of these green pockets is the Paseo del Bosque or the Wood, extending into the city outskirts. This wooded area houses an observatory, an artificial lake and a zoological garden. The Natural Sciences Museum within the grounds is considered to be amongst the best in the country. It also has a Roman-style amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 2,500.
