The city is often referred to as Salta la Linda, or Salta the beautiful, because of the impressive architecture that draws visitors from all parts of the country as well as from across the world. The main square is called the Plaza 9 de Julio which is flanked by the towering cathedral and the grand Town Hall. The San Bernardo Convent, renowned for its carved door, and the San Francisco Church are also in the vicinity.
The MAAM Museum is an archaeology museum which portrays the life and culture of the Incas. The Museum of Contemporary Arts has on display the works of many local masters. To get a better understanding of the region’s history, visit the Uriburu Museum and the Cabildo Museum.
There are several villages in the outskirts which make for an interesting visit, like San Lorenzo for its idyllic rural setting or La Caldera for its many architectural gems.
