Yellow fever, hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations are strongly recommended. Altitude sickness is the most common complaint in Bolivia with much of the country lying above 3,050 m. Diabetics, and people with heart complications and chest problems should seek advice before travelling to the country. Malaria and dengue fever are prevalent in some parts of the country, and hence, it is advisable to take precautions against mosquito bites. Travellers are advised to consume only bottled water. Medical insurance is also recommended. Travellers should maintain caution in regions like La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz, where protests and strikes are common.
Travellers should avoid demonstrations. Female tourists should avoid taking tours on their own and always avoid unlicensed guides. Visitors should be vigilant with their belongings. Cases of criminals posing as police officers and fleecing people are on the rise.
