Tarija is a famous city in the southern region of Bolivia. It is the largest city and also the capital of the Tarija Department. According to the census in 2006, the population of Tarija was around 170900. Tarija is also known as San Bernardo de la Frontera de Tarija. On the 4th of July, 1574, Tarija was established by Don Luis de Fuentes Vargas. The city lies on the banks of the river Guadalquivir. The city was named after ‘Francisco de Tarija’, the first one to visit this place. Tarija became a Republic in 1825. The Tarija city lies well above the sea level, at an altitude of almost 1924 meters. The weather is pleasant and mild. The nights in winter are slightly cooler. The city of Tarija is popular for its vineyards and Mediterranean climate. One can easily access Tarija, both by land and air. The Tarija airport offers regular trips to all the major Bolivian cities. A main bus terminal offers services both nationally and internationally.
