Rio Branco: Attractions and more...
Rio Branco paves for the way for ecotourism with its abundance of natural resources. In the past, the rubber plantations in Rio Branco have been a site of conflict between the traditional rubber-tappers and the multinational companies.
The Casa do Seringueiro is a museum displaying the life and times of rubber-tappers, especially that of Chico Mendes, the then leader of the rubber-tapper’s union. The Museu da Borrachá (Museum of Rubber) focuses on the ethno-historical background of Acre, especially the rubber boom.
Constructed in the style of a Roman basilica, the Catedral Nossa Senhora de Nazaré is worth visiting. The Palácio Rio Branco should not be missed either.
Praça Plácido de Castro (the town square) is a lively social centre of the city, where every Sunday, the Feira de Artesanato takes place, a demonstration of rainforest crafts. Being a university town, the nightlife in Rio Branco is vibrant.
