The city is an interesting blend of tropical beaches, forests, modern architecture as well as historical buildings.
On Praça São Francisco (public square) is the magnificent Church of São Francisco from the colonial period and the Santo Antìnio monastery, a fine example of Franciscan architecture. Nearby is the Casa de Pólvora, a museum showcasing the history of João Pessoa. The Capela Dourada or the Golden Chapel is a must-see, with its gilded interiors.
For recreation, you could relax at Bica Park in the city or head to the beaches in the outlying districts. The most frequented beach is Tambaú, famed for its ‘jangadas’ (rafts) and ‘jangadeiros’ (raftsmen). Other beaches are Cabo Branco, which has the ‘Ponta do Seixas’ and Penha, located next to a fishing village. You could also visit the picturesque island of Areia Vermelha.
A unique experience is the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Penha celebrated in December, a local folk festival.
