The city lies just on the equator, at 0º N, and the monument Marco Zero (Zero Mark) marks this. The Zerão Stadium in Macapá is the only stadium in the entire world where each half of the football field is located in different hemispheres.
The São José fort stands at the entrance of the city, and is an example of the French influence on the culture of the city. A must-see is the Church of Sao Jose de Macapá, the oldest monument in the city built in the Jesuit colonial style. The City Hall of Macapá, a 112-year-old Neo-classical construction is also worth seeing.
At the Casa do Artesão, one can purchase indigenous arts and crafts.
Visit the Lago Piratuba, a preserved natural reserve in the Amazon, a few kilometres away from Macapá. For a unique experience, also visit the coastal town of Mazagão. One could also take boat trips to different islands in the Amazon from Macapá.
