The Madeira–Mamoré Railway Line is the biggest tourist attraction in Porto Velho. The train takes the old route, passing through old stations and following the bend of the track along the river Madeira and through stretches of the Amazon Rainforest. There is also the Railway Museum which houses relics from the old Madeira–Mamoré line. The steam engine of 1878 is a special attraction.
Rondônia Museum is worth visiting too, with its collection of fossils of prehistoric animals and ethnological material related to the natives. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the biggest cathedral of the state of Rondônia.
One could head to the Cai N'Agua harbour and hire boats for trips on the river Madeira.
A few kilometres away from Porto Velho is the town of Santo Antônio, with its main attraction, Antônio waterfall. For a unique experience, head to the fishing village of Teotônio.
