Santos Dumont Regional Airport is Rio de Janeiro’s 2nd-largest airport after Galeao International Airport.
It is situated about 2-km from the downtown and operated by Infraero. The second name honours the aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont.
Due to its modernistic features, it is also considered to be among Brazil’s national landmarks. It is also famous for some of its shortest airways mainly used for the landings of Airbus and Boeing.
Since late 2004, it has only been handling the flights to Paulo International Airport and some smaller regional flights. Regular airline companies are TAM, Gol, OceanAir, Team, Varig, Total and Passaredo. The passenger terminal is being renovated and expanded for more comfort and convenience for use of the “air-bridge” shuttle service.
Due to its specialized scope of flight services, the facilities within the complex are appropriately basic. A restaurant, a couple of shops and tourist information centre can be found here.
