The inhabitants of this city are known as paulistanos and claim descent from Italians, the Portuguese, Africans, Germans, the Lebanese and the Japanese.
The culture of the city is a smorgasbord of the different ethnicities of its inhabitants. Portuguese is the official language, but German, Japanese, Arabic and Spanish are also widely spoken.
