The city of Sao Paulo is located in the south-eastern part of Brazil. It covers an area of 1,530 square kilometres and is the capital of the state of Sao Paulo.
The city is located on the Brazilian Highlands at an altitude of 800 m. The climate is warm and mild with temperatures averaging the mid-twenties in the summer months.
Sao Paulo city has a population of over 11 million people. It is the most populous city in the Southern Hemisphere. The city is characterised by its ethnic diversity. The inhabitants of this city are known as paulistanos and claim descent from Italians, the Portuguese, Africans, Germans, the Lebanese and the Japanese.
The culture of the city is a smorgasbord of the different ethnicities of its inhabitants. Portuguese is the official language, but German, Japanese, Arabic and Spanish are also widely spoken.
