Liberdade district is home to some of the largest Japanese communities outside of Japan since 1950s. This district is served by the Sao Paulo Metro. The entrance is marked by a nine meter tall red torii, a Japanese arch which marks the entrance to Shinto temple. This towering structure has been there since 1974. There are thousands of citizens of Sao Paulo who flock to the public square in Liberdade each Sunday to purchase craft goods at the weekly fair.
