Between May and November, the waters of Parnaíba and Poti retreat forming lakes surrounded by sandbanks, a unique event to experience.
Within the city, the Church of St. Benedict built in the Neo-classical style is a must-see. Another church, Nossa Senhora de Lourdes displays fine life-sized figures of saints and angels. On the Marshal Deodoro Square is the foundation site of the city, in the form on a marble column.
Those interested in the history and culture of Teresina must go to the Piauí Museum containing religious art, Indian artefacts and fossils. The Karnak Palace, seat of the State Government built in the Greek-Roman style, is worth a visit. A beautiful piece of architecture is the 4 de Setembro Theatre, a 113-year-old theatre with Neo-Gothic arches.
One could also visit the Troca Troca market on Maranhao Avenue, which is an open-air barter market.
