Antofagasta is known not only for its natural beauty but also for its architecture. The Barrio Històrico has many historic Victorian buildings. Torre del Reloj (clock tower) is a miniature replica of Big Ben. Alongside this is the Quiosco de la Oquesta, a place where choirs usually meet to entertain the public. The Plaza Colon has a gothic cathedral with interesting stained glass windows.
Visitors will learn more about Antofagasta by visiting the Museo Regional. It contains interesting exhibits on the city’s past and the mining industry as well as a rich collection of artefacts from the surrounding region.
The city is dotted by splendid geological forms and has a typical flora and fauna. The beaches at Mejillones, Santa Maria Island and Hornitos are popular among tourists. The warm and calm waters are ideal for aquatic sports.
