Things to Do in Iquique: attractions to See in Iquique

Iquique: Attractions and more...

Iquique is the site of one of Chile’s most significant naval battles, which took place on 21 May 1879. As a result, the city is home to some of the area’s most impressive historic architecture, dating from before the turn-of-the-century nitrate boom. First-rate resorts and beaches make Iquique a preferred departure point for trips to the desert nitrate offices and the Altiplano (a high plateau in the Andean region).

Some of Iquique’s stunning beaches are El Aguila, Lobito, Primeras Piedras, Brava, Los Verdes and Huayquique.

Other sites of attraction include The Regional Naval and Anthropological Museum, The Municipal Theatre, Astereca Palace, Tamarugal National Reserve, The Isluga volcano and Lauca National Park.

Santa Laura, located 48 km from Iquique, harbours the remains of saltpeter (potassium nitrate) mines. Here, one would find a collection of historical objects related to daily life in the saltpeter mines.
