Chacabuco can be referred to as one amongst several abandoned ‘saltpaper’ or ‘nitrate’ towns in northern Chile’s Atacama Desert. The other nitrate towns with respect to Atacama Desert are inclusive of ‘Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpaper Works’. Chacabuco, like majority of other ‘ghost towns’ within Atacama Desert, went on to become concentration camp at the time of ‘Pinochet regime’ in the year 1973.
