127 kilometers towards the Northeast of Calama lies the Los Flamencos National Reserve. This is 27 kilometers towards the South of San Pedro de Atacama. This reserve was established in 1990 by the Government. It is spread over an area of 73.986 hectares. The total area is divided into different sectors called as – Sector Salares de Tara y Aguas Calientes, Sector Salar de Pujsa, Sector Lagunas Miscanti-Miniques, Sector Soncor, Sector Aguas de Quelana, Sector Valle de la Luna and Sector Tambillo.
