About 75 kilometers towards the East of Calama is situated a hilltop fort called as Pukara de Turi. The altitude of this spot is 3100 meters above sea level. This fort was constructed by the Atacameno people. It is spread over an area of 3.5 hectares and the construction date is approximately in the 12th century. In 1982, it was declared as a national monument. A large part of the structure is made from volcanic rocks mixed with smaller stones and a dry-stone wall technique is used.
