Ahu Tongariki is situated on the south coast of Easter and was the site of one of the largest of the Ahu. However, in 1960, there was a huge tidal wave which was generated by an earthquake off the Chile coast and hit Ahu Tongariki destroying the platform as well as the massive moai which got swept hundreds of yards inland. It was not until 1992, when the site was restored under the direction of Chilean archaeologist, Claudio Cristino.
