Although no particular vaccinations are required, it is advisable to get a Hepatitis A inoculation before travelling to Chile. The drinking water available is contaminated; therefore, visitors are advised to consume only bottled water. Due to expensive medical facilities, travel insurance is highly recommended.
Considered to be relatively safe, there are no major risks for tourists in the country. Minor instances of pick-pockets and mugging have increased recently. Tourists are accordingly advised to be careful in big cities such as Santiago.
Chile has a history of land mines, some of which are still lodged in the restricted and border areas adjoining Peru and Bolivia, in regions I and II, Argentina region XII, and the wilderness area in that region. Visitors are cautioned to remain on the marked roads and seek the guidance of the local concerned authorities if travelling to the border areas of regions I, II or XII.
