Punta Arenas, located in Chile, is said to be the southernmost city in the world. It has a population of around 120,000.
Although most of the inhabitants are Chilean by descent, some of them have European ancestries. Today, the city reflects an eclectic mix of cultures, from English sheep ranchers to Portuguese sailors.
The temperature in Punta Arenas is largely moderated by its proximity to the ocean. On the whole, the climate is rather dry, the wettest month being May. The city is also known for its strong winds, which are supposedly the strongest in summer.
Agricultural production, including the rearing of sheep and cattle, plays a significant role in the city’s economy. Punta Arenas also has some of Chile’s principal oil reserves. Fisheries and silviculture are also an important source of livelihood.
