The museum was founded by the Belgian Jesuit Priest of Chile named Gustavo Le Paige. He settled in San pedro in 1955 and stated his collection of Atacama cultural artifacts then apart from his pastoral activities. The museum has three pavilion namely, Exhibition hall, Laboratories, Research and Library and Store house. The museum is home to about 380,000 artworks which belong to Atacama culture and the Spaniards arrival.
