One of the most striking cities in Chile is Valdivia. The population of the city is 135,000 and the city was founded by Pedro de Valdivia in 1552. The city was reformed in 1645 and strong fortifications were founded in 18th century around the city. A centre of industrial importance it is known for factories of beer and Tanneries and gained importance with the immigration of Germans. In 1960 the city was completely destroyed by a powerful earthquake. Temperate rainy climate with a hint of Mediterranean influence exists in Valdivia.
The climate of the city can also be categorized as Oceanic. The average temperature in summers is 17 °C and in winter the temperature goes down to 9 °C. The culture of the city is unique and is influenced by Spanish and German cultures. The city is also called “the City of Rivers”, “The pearl of the South”, “The key of the South seas”, “Gibraltar of the Pacific”, and “Chile's most beautiful city”.
