Monument and Historic Building

The Cathedral of Salt

The Cathedral is an important tourist venue for locals and tourists alike. This building was carved into the Zipaquirá Mountains which is an area where salt was mined.

The salt mines have an educational and as well as historical value. The cathedral was originally built between 1807 and 1823. The building seen today was rebuilt in 1995, replacing the earlier construction that was closed because of structural problems.

The cathedral is a religious place, but, is also considered the architectonic jewel of modernity and has become a well known place in Colombia.

The Cathedral has five main structural segments: the dome, the way of the cross, the balconies, the ramp for going down and the central naves.

The way of the cross is made up of small chapels and is carved out of salt. The cross leads to the dome which is around 11 meters long, which leads to the ramp and finally to the central naves. Inside the park, the visitors can learn about the art, natural resources and geology of the site as well.
