Bogotá was once known for its violence and was an unsafe place to visit but this situation has now improved. The bus service in the region has also improved and become safer than before. However, even now it is not wise to travel at night especially in isolated areas. Prices are cheap and reasonable and the people are extremely friendly. The food is delicious and the place has attractive scenic surroundings. Like any other big city be careful with your valuables and important documents. Avoid drinking tap water as there is a possibility of catching infection, although the tap water in Bogotá is quite clean. The city is situated at a high altitude and is mostly cool and pleasant but can also be unpredictable as there can be rain, fog and sunshine all on the same day. The official language is Spanish though English is also spoken and the currency is the Peso. Do not exchange money at unlicensed places or establishments.
