Cucuta is the capital and also the most populated city of North Santander situated in the north eastern part of Colombia. It is a very important commercial center of Colombia. The city is surrounded by Venezuela in the east, Villa de Rosario in the south, in the northern part by Tibu and by San Cayetano in the west. The city is located at an elevation of 320 m above the sea level. The total population of the city was found to be 1,196,775 according to the 2006 census hence it is regarded to be the seventh most populated city in Colombia The total area of the city has been found to be around 1,176 km according to the Census Bureau which contributes to around 8%25 of the total area of Santander. There are two universities for educational purposes which are the University of Pamplona and Francisco De Paula Santander University. There are many rivers bordering the city which include the Pamplonita, San Miguel, Guaramito, and Zulia which serve as reservoirs for agriculture and irrigation. The average temperature ranges around 28 degrees throughout the year with high temperatures around 35 degrees in the summer season.
