Neiva is one of the most important cities in Southern Colombia due to its strategical geographical location. It is located in South Central Columbia in the Valley of the Magdalena River. This city is the capital of the Huila Department. The Colombian capital, Bogota is a five hours drive from this city. Neiva is the home of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Neiva. As per the culture of this place, during the last two weeks of June and early July, the San Pedro festivities are celebrated here. During this cultural festival, there are daily parades through the downtown area and showing of a folk dance called as Sanjuanero. The participants dress in varying costumes and there is competition as to who is the best performer in the choreography.
Neiva has a population of 378,857 as per the 2005-06 census.
Neiva has a low altitude and is close to the equator. The daytime temperature varies from 89 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit resulting in a hot yearly average climate.
