Valledupar is located amidst the mountains of Serrania del Perija and Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia. It is a municipality and city in Northeastern Colombia and is the capital of the Department of Cesar. The city lies to the margin of the Cesar River and Guatapuri River. Locally, it is referred to as Valle de Upar or “Valley of Upar” in honor of Cacique Upar, an Amerindian cacique that ruled the valley. The highlight of the culture of this city is the Vallenato Legend Festival which is hosted in this city. The city is considered as the cradle of vallenato music and this form is a representative of the Colombian culture.
Valledupar has a population of 348,990 as per the 2005 census.
