Santiago de Guayaquil, or merely Guayaquil, is the largest and the most populous city in Ecuador; it is also the nation’s main port. It is the capital of the Guayas province and lies on the west margin of the Guayas River, which flows into the Gulf of Guayaquil in the Pacific Ocean.
The city of almost three million inhabitants is known throughout Ecuador as ‘The Pacific Pearl’ and is the centre of Ecuador’s fishing and manufacturing industries.
From December through April, Guayaquil is hot and humid with temperatures reaching up to 35º C on some days. The rest of the year is cooler with temperatures between 20º C and 25º C.
The name Guayaquil originates from an old native legend about an Indian chief ‘Guayas’ and his wife ‘Quil’, who according to folklore, ended their lives in order to avoid surrendering to the invading Spaniards.
