The city celebrates 24 July (Simón Bolivar’s birthday) and 25 July (the Foundation of Guayaquil) with a lively carnival atmosphere; parades, beauty pageants and dancing events that are illuminated by firework displays add to the festivities.
‘Mercado Artesanal’ is a famous tourist attraction. It is the city’s largest artisan market and has well priced paintings, jewellery and local crafts.
‘Plaza Centenario’ is the city’s largest plaza; spanning four blocks, it has a monument depicting the liberty of Guayaquil with the founding fathers of the country surrounding it.
‘Seminario Park’, also known as ‘Parque Bolivar’, is surrounded with iguanas measuring around 4 to 5 feet.
Guayaquil food is very popular among tourists; people enjoy eating the great variety of dishes that the city offers. Some famous recipes are ‘Guatita’, which is made with peanuts, ‘Encebollado’, which is a seafood soup and ‘Fritada’ (fried pork).
