Tourist Guide Latacunga
Latacunga, capital of the Cotopaxi Province, is a plateau town of Ecuador and lies 89 km south of Quito. Latacunga is located 9,055 feet above sea level and its climate is windy and cold. The town has abided repeatedly from volcanic eruptions, as the active volcano Cotopaxi is situated only 25 km away. The most renowned food of this town includes tostado, plantains, empanadas, popcorn and chugchucaras. The economy of Latacunga is dependant on floriculture and agriculture. Latacunga has an international airport that is used as an Air Force base and not for passenger use. A popular conventional festival of Latacunga is La Fiesta de la Mama Negra. This festival is a mixture of African, Spanish and indigenous influences and falls twice a year. The historic downtown of Latacunga extends to about 30 squares. The well-known buildings to visit include the main square, the municipal palace and Saint Francis’s church.
