Loja is the capital of Ecuador’s Loja province, situated in the southernmost tip of Ecuador near its border with Peru. Founded in 1548, it is one of the oldest cities in Ecuador and has the distinction of being the first city in the country to be wired for electric power in 1896. It is located on the route of the Pan-American Highway.
Loja is located 2100 m above sea level in the Cuxibamba valley. It enjoys a temperate, spring-like climate all year long; the weather is best from October through January. The region is characterised by afternoon rainbows, and the surrounding valley, due to its ideal weather, is often called ‘the longevity island’.
The present-day population is approximately 140,000. Its inhabitants are very proud of their cultural heritage, due to which the city is also known as the ‘musical capital of Ecuador’.
