Otavalo, which is situated in the Imbabura Province of Ecuador, is a large indigenous town. The town is bounded by the peaks of the Cotacachi 4,9995m, Imbabura 4,610m and Mojanda volcanoes. The native Otavalinos are renowned for weaving textiles particularly made of wool which are sold at the Saturday market. The main industry of the town is tourism and as a result there are numerous tour operators, hostels and hotels. Many of the nearby towns and villages of Otavalo are famous for their own meticulous crafts. The women of Otavalo wear characteristic white embellished blouses which have flared lace sleeves, dark or black over skirts with white or cream under skirts. With a woven multi colored 3cm band, the long hair of women is tied back. They normally have several chains of golden beads on their necks. Men wear dark blue ponchos and white trousers.
