Plaza San Blas is a square which is situated at the gateway to the historic centre of Quito and marks the northern limit of the city.
This square has a simple church built here in the sixteenth century which was renovated in the eighteenth century.
Many stores and medical centres are located in its vicinity.
On one side of the square is an Old Catholic cemetery built for the local people.
There are many guides available at the Plaza Sans Blas who will describe its history and that of the area.
This regal city was founded in 1534 with just two hundred settlers. It was previously occupied by the Quitus tribe in the area from Cerro Del Panecillo in the south to the Plaza se San Blas in the heart of the city.
Buildings in the city have a Spanish architectural style and there are a number of temples, cathedrals and religious structures found here.
