Old Town

In the heart of Old Quito is a winged statue of independence on the top of a raised pillar.
The Cathedral Metropolitana is also located in the old town; this is where Jose Antonio Sucre, the famous South American freedom fighter is buried.
The Iglesia San Agustin is where the declaration of independence of Ecuador was signed on the 10th of August 1809.
Many heroes of the war for independence are buried in the basement of the church. The inside of the church is beautifully painted and gives it an artistic look.
Plaza San Francisco is another beautiful place to visit. It is largest and oldest colonial edifice in the city.
La Compania is said to be the most beautiful church in America. It is believed that seven tons of gold were used on the ceiling, walls and the altars of ‘Quito’s Sistine Chapel’.
A lot of damage was done to this beautiful church by the earthquake in 1987. However restoration work is still ongoing.
