Plaza Grande is also known by the name, Independence Square or the Big Square. This is a historic public square of Quito and is situated in the heart of the old city.
This central square of the city is also one of the symbols of the executive power of the nation. Here, one can see the monument dedicated to the independence heroes of 10th August, 1809, known as the First Cry of Independence of the Royal Audience of Quito from Spanish monarchy.
Nearby sights to see are the Carondelet Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Municipal Palace.
