Concepción is the capital city of the Concepción Department which is located in northern Paraguay. It lies on the eastern banks of the Paraguay River. The city was founded in the year 1773 by Agustin Fernando de Pinedo, the Spanish Governor. It has a total area of 8.490 square kilometer with an altitude of 44 meter. It has a total population of 76,378 according to the census conducted in the year 2008. The time zone is -4 GMT (UTC). Its area code is 8700. It is the center of operations for the whole Chaco Boreal area of Paraguay. The Paraguay River makes navigation possible and hence commercial shipping activities are carried out. By exploiting the riches of Gran Chaco and the river port, the Concepcion city prospered in the early 20th century. It was a victim of the 1947 Paraguayan Civil War. Roman Catholic Diocese of Concepcion en Paraguay finds its seat in this city. The Concepcion city is linked to Asuncion by air. The city is a religious centre and encompasses the Catholic Salesian church and school.
