Villarrica is the capital city of Guaira Department and is located in the Oriental Region in Paraguay. It was established by Ruy Diaz de Melgarejo, the Spanish Captain in the year 1570. The city covers a total area of 247 square kilometers with an altitude of 180 meters. It has a total population of 56,385 people. Its postal code is 5000 with the area code (595) (541). The Villarrica city lies adjacent to Ybyturuzu and it is a suitable place for the cultivation of sugarcane. A healthy climate occurs throughout with a temperature of 21°C Celsius on an average basis. It reaches to about 38°C Celsius in the summer and to 1°C Celsius in the winter. It receives heavy rainfall from October through November. The most important means of income to the Department are from the areas of agriculture, the textile industry, dairy products etc. Agriculture is the backbone of the country’s economy. Due to the invasion of Paulist Bandeiras, the city was moved over seven times prior to finding a particular place as its location. Hence it is also known by the name of ‘Wandering City’.
