Aguas Calientes: Attractions and more...
Hot springs
One has to walk for a short distance from the town of Aguas Calientes to reach the natural thermal springs. These hot springs are situated adjoining Rio Aguas Calientes that cascades down the hillside and are in a narrow valley between two mountains. Here one can find many sand bottom pools that have different temperatures. There is also an outdoor lounge and change rooms. The lounge is close to the pool overlooking the hot springs. Close to the hot spring complex is a large swimming pool which is not a part of the hot springs. Children can play in this pool.
Huayna Picchu and Temple of the Moon
Tourists have to hike to reach Huayna Picchu and the Temple of the Moon. This hike begins from a wooden hut at the farthest end of the Machu Picchu ruins. As this hike required from 1 to 2 hours and is very arduous and steep it must be begun before 1 pm. The last part of this hike which is steep open rock for a length of 20 meters has to be crossed by means of a rope and ladder. One can have breathtaking views of the surrounding region from the top of Huayna Picchu. On the other side of the peak below is the trail of the Temple of the Moon, which is a natural cave that has Inca stonework.
Inca Trail
The Inca Trail is a part of the Machu Picchu historical sanctuary. Those who intend to hike may do so with the help of an agency as hiking without an agency is not allowed. The reservation must be done well in advance specifically during the rush period of June to August.
