Arequipa: Attractions and more...
Owing to its colonial architecture, Arequipa has several places of interest. The Convento de Santa Catalina, close to the Plaza de Armas, is a visual treat. The Convento de Santa Teresa, although not as architecturally enthralling as Santa Catalina, has some spectacular paintings and artefacts.
Housed in the Museum of the Universidad Católica de Santa María, ‘The Ice Maiden’, or ‘Juanita Mummy’ is a fifteenth century Inca mummy of a fourteen-year-old girl.
Molino de Sabandía, a water mill that is three centuries old, offers a glimpse into Arequipa’s old countryside. The old Jesuit convent, which houses boutiques offering fine Alpaca garments, is a good place to shop.
Also visit the Colca Canyon, once thought to be the deepest canyon in the world, and the Cruz del Condor which offers a grand view of many condors. Trek up to Chachani, recommended only for experienced mountaineers, or El Misti, an easier trek.
