Cerro de Pasco is the capital city of the Pasco region, located in Central Peru. The city is well-known for its mining center. The city is linked to the city of Lima by means of rail. This city is one of the world’s highest cities with an elevation of 13,973 feet in the Andes. Silver was discovered in Cerro de Pasco in the early 17th century, thus forming an important place for the production of silver. Even though the silver was depleted by the Spanish, the area is still a lively mining center. The mining area is presently under the control of Volcan Compania Minera, after its privatization in 1990. In the recent years, about 3.34 million tons of metal were mined, of which 58, 300 tons were lead, 155,300 tons were zinc and 8.5 million ounces were silver. The production of copper was stopped many years before, even though the remains of the old industrial plant can be found beside the Colquijirca property.
